Buena Vista Social Club to close on Broadway on 17 January 2027 as West End run is set
The Tony-winning Spanish-language musical ends its Broadway run after 767 performances, with three other companies still playing and London planned for 2027.

Buena Vista Social Club will give its final Broadway performance on 17 January 2027, its producers announced on 6 November 2026. By then the musical will have played 27 previews and 767 performances at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, according to Playbill, a run Deadline puts at 96 weeks. A West End production is scheduled to begin in London in 2027; no theatre or dates have been named.
The show, with a book by Marco Ramirez and direction by Saheem Ali, tells the story of the Havana musicians who came together to record the Grammy-winning 1997 album of the same name. It began previews on 21 February 2025 and opened on 19 March 2025. Its producers describe its score as the first on Broadway performed only in Spanish.
Awards, then a softer box office
The production received 11 Tony Award nominations and won five, including choreography for Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck, featured actress in a musical for Natalie Venetia Belcon, orchestrations, sound design and a special award for its on-stage band. The cast recording won a Grammy.
Takings have fallen from their peak. Deadline reports that the show often grossed well above $1 million a week in its first year; in the week ending 1 November 2026 it took $678,878, with the theatre 89% full. The production has not yet recouped its costs, but its producers say it is on schedule to do so before it closes.
We are thrilled the Broadway production is on schedule to recoup as we look ahead to an exciting tour, special engagements in Mexico and Puerto Rico, the film and so much more.

Four companies now, London next
The musical is running in four places: on Broadway; on a North American tour, currently at the Music Hall at Fair Park in Dallas; at the Antonio Paoli Festival Hall at the Centro de Bellas Artes in Puerto Rico; and at the Teatro de los Insurgentes in Mexico City. Playbill reports that all four were due to perform on the weekend of the announcement. The producers say the show has drawn more Hispanic ticket buyers than any other in the history of The Shubert Organization.
The current Broadway cast is led by Gina Torres as Omara, with the Yankees great Bernie Williams on guitar in the band. Belcon returns as Omara on 30 November 2026, and Ashley De La Rosa returns as Young Haydee on 16 November 2026.

What it means for acts
A Broadway closing is not the end of a show's earnings: Buena Vista Social Club leaves New York with a tour, two Latin American engagements, a London run and a film in the works. It also shows how far a catalogue album can travel when it is rebuilt for the stage, and how a cast recording can win awards and keep the music selling on its own. Artists and estates with a well-loved record should treat a stage adaptation as a long-term licence across several cities, not a single Broadway bet.
