Mary J. Blige has struck a deal with Primary Wave Music covering the compositions and recordings from across her career, the independent publisher announced on 26 October 2026. Songs named in the announcement include 'Family Affair', 'My Life', 'Mary Jane (All Night Long)', 'You Bring Me Joy', 'Be Happy', 'Be Without You' and 'I Can Love You'.

Financial terms were not disclosed. Blige and her team gain access to Primary Wave's marketing and publishing operation, and the two sides may work together on new music marketing, branding, digital projects and sync, the placing of songs in film, television and advertising. No specific projects have been announced.

From the moment I heard 'You Remind Me' on NY's KISS-FM, I became a Day 1 Mary J. Blige fan.

What was actually agreed

The wording matters here. Primary Wave calls the arrangement a partnership, and neither side has said whether it bought an ownership stake, although some outlets have described it as a catalogue sale. The catalogue newsletter Deep Cuts says the deal clearly covers her entire catalogue, but notes that the announcement does not mention her name, image and likeness rights, unlike Primary Wave's recent deals with Robert Palmer, Wilson Pickett and Donna Summer.

The deal adds to a run of catalogue agreements at Primary Wave, including ones with The Verve Pipe's Brian Vander Ark and Savage Garden's Daniel Jones.

A catalogue with a working artist behind it

Blige is still very much on stage. Digital Music News lists 15 studio albums and sales of well over 50 million records, along with nine Grammy Awards from 37 nominations. She entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2024. Her Las Vegas residency, Mary J. Blige: My Life, My Story, began in May 2026 and has been extended through February 2027, for 20 shows in all. That means the songs in this deal are being performed to paying audiences while any new marketing plans take shape.

What it means for acts

'Partnership' can describe anything from a service arrangement to a sale, so managers should establish exactly which rights move, for how long and at what price. Treat name and likeness rights as a separate conversation with their own value. A catalogue partner's marketing promises are worth only what the contract says, so ask for named commitments on sync, branding and reissues.
